Oh yeah, in the last picture you can see my fourth year project in the distance. Now that I think of it, last two studio projects were based on an island.

MARRIAGE
A MAN WILL ALWAYS WANT WHAT HE CANNOT HAVE -...

TED MOSBY

MARRIAGE

A MAN WILL ALWAYS WANT WHAT HE CANNOT HAVE - Sherry Argov, Why Men Love Bitches

Ted Mosby is an architect, wingman, best friend, and hopeless romantic from the TV series, How I Met Your Mother. He’s in a desperate search for love, with hopes to finding “the one” which he’ll eventually marry and have two kids with. Throughout the series, he meets many women. Although he feels like they will be the one he’ll likely end up being with, the world turns on him and denies him his only want in life: marriage.

The design was derived of this idea of marriage. The first thing that popped in my head with marriage is a diamond ring. In the life of Ted, this idea never seems possible. There’s an episode where he gets left at the altar, which gave me this motif of a shattered/ fractured diamond.

I created the building through the words “I Want”. The letter I was used to create a tube as a response to the idea of self-evaluation. The letters of want wrap/ bend around the letter I because sometimes we’re blinded by the idea of unnecessary wants. Through paneling tools, I created (honestly, by accident) these wild and crazy fractured interior walls. I then took the letter I again, and used it as a tube, which I paneled to create a simple diamond-like skin. I then deleted parts of it to represent broken. The diamond like structure is elevated so that it is unattainable. The elevation makes it mandatory that you walk beneath it. For me, when you are below something, you show humility. Humility derives from strength, so having the willingness to move forth is the greatest thing you can do in terms of heartbreak. As cliché as it is, the end of the tunnel is open, representing liberation.

Simple gradient fades to explain the “change” with...

Simple gradient fades to explain the “change” with in the skin of my project. The left is the original clothes while the middle portion is the building naked. The far right outfit shows the most interesting shape in terms of angles of the new skin. The pattern on the bottom left reflects the pattern used (I forgot to add three intersecting lines within it, which I used as a glass louvre.

Original

Naked

Panelling Skin

It’s pretty amazing how technology pushes your design to a new extreme. This is only the beginning with my experiments with Panelling tools - But wow!! It took me hours to create that simple skin on my project. This new addition took at least half that amount of time (it probably would’ve been much quicker if my computer were faster. I didn’t realize how much RAM it took to run Panelling tools.)

Gonna give it another go. Hopefully next one gets sicker.

Instead of keeping a one point perspective, Professor insisted...

Instead of keeping a one point perspective, Professor insisted that I try a different approach. From there I took a view that I stumbled upon in class on Tuesday, which I thought was powerful and “out of this world” (sorry for the cliché).

The Library of Babel represents infinity. I tried to portray this idea through the narrow passage and the nebula in the ceiling.

The story also says that every book within the library is unique, but only through slight imperfections, from careless errors in spelling, punctuations, etc. This is represented through the floating platforms.

The stairway is an interpretation of this idea of “Read with no understanding”. The descending stairs can be understood as a stair, but since it’s impractical, it seems to have no reason to be there.

I used the white space to support the sense of infinity. Since it flows into the beyond, we have no true understanding on how far they extend.

The color scheme I went for was derived from a shoe which released this past weekend. I always have a difficult time choosing colors so I used the shoe as a reference for swashes. Here’s a fun fact: The Nike Foamposite “Galaxy” retailed at stores for $220, but someone purchased (through a bid) the shoe at a reselling price of $77,000.00! And no, I did not get my decimal points mixed up.

Here’s some new things I’ve tried that I haven’t done in previous assignments:

“Burn Layer” Rather that burn, I created a new layer filled it with 50% gray, turned the transparency to 70%, 50% on others, and I began to paint with black. Finally attach this “burn” layer to corresponding layer.

“Content Aware” I’ve used it once before during work to create patterns, but I totally forgot about it during this class. Since my perspectives are insanely wide, I needed a huge sheet of textures, this is where being able to fill an entire sheet of one material came in handy.

“Folders” As simple as it is, with all the masking that I had to do, folders become a huge help in organizing.

“Flip Horizontal” Sometimes you’ve seen your project in the same light for so long, it begins to look plain, dull, boring, and old. Basically, after everything was done, I just flipped (mirrored) the image so that things begin to look new again. Not only that, but whenever I draw, take photos, or build any composition, it tends to be right-heavy. Flipping the image, helped breath some new light into what I was creating.

Finally through my model into Rhino and got some screen shots of...

Finally through my model into Rhino and got some screen shots of the different styles that Rhino V5 has to offer. Luckily there’s a a “Line” preset, which should save me some in photoshop. I also have photos of different render presets, which I’ll try to use to help me capture some dramatic shadows in photoshop.

Next step: A whole lot of masking.

FML.

Began this little design with triangle cut outs and some tape....

Began this little design with triangle cut outs and some tape.

From there I began working on a study model, which I photographed in hopes of finding a cool perspective.

I wasn’t feeling the perspective that I shot so I retook a picture of the model in a different perspective. One point to be exact.

Instead of using the model (I didn’t really like it, I haven’t found much success in study models before) I decided to sketch out some ideas. I took some trace and began constructing some kind of one point perspective. The last three photos are one points of what kind of view I want to work with.

The next step is to move the sketches/ model into rhino. From there it should be at lot easier to move forward with rendering a quick photo and overlaying texture.

Messing around with a project from a year ago. It’s not a photo, but a computer rendering instead. My computer started acting up when I tried to do a higher res rendering, so the quality suffered. Luckily, photoshop can hide all those pixel flaws.

Hand Drawn Lines (You can see I tried to make some modifications)

I honestly can’t remember what building this was. If you really want to find it, go back a couple pages on archdaily.com and you should find it.

I enjoy hand drawn perspectives and I really wanted to give this drawing that black and white mechanical look. There’s something about grey backgrounds with a black vignette that I JUST LIKE.

I played with a lot of masking and alpha channels, which is super fun. I played with some masonry overlay on the third floor, but left the rest clean (which is pretty much like the actual building).

I wanted to play with some filters, but I wanted to keep the lines sharp and have the photo stay black and white. Now that I think of it, I have this sudden urge to make the original photo have a water color look and have those black lines contrast the soft texture from the brushes.

I’ll definitely switch things up for the next assignment.

The photos above are a few perspective renderings of my room. We were assigned to draw our living room, but my mom tends to over furnish everything, so finding straight lines from all the curtains and random decorations hanging from the wall would make things difficult.

I played with a Wacom tablet before, but this is probably the first time I used it for an Architecture purpose. Not so satisfied with what I’ve done, I need to get my hand and eye much more familiar with the foreign medium, but in time I’ll get there.

I tried to utilize the power of photoshop with sketching. Used masks here and there, layers of course, I also tried to use a Mosaic filter to fade into the white.
